I still use Win2K pro. I once signed up for the MCSE (which I didn't complete) and received some CDs as part of the package. My Win2K is an evaluation version, which works for 120 days beautifully. After that, it tends to work for sometime and then warn that it is going to restart (or shutdown? I don't remember) after one hour and does it without further warning. I have no problems with this setup as I reformat and reinstall the OS 3-4 times every year. More over, I think I can get around this 120 days limitation but I don't need it yet. I have SP4 downloaded and kept in a different partition ready for installation immediately after setting up the OS.
I use Openoffice program, which is free. It helps me in opening Excel, power point etc in that. I don't need these programs a lot but I let it stay in my computer. For anti virus, I use avast. So far, no problems. For firewall, I have Zone Alarm. That is also free. I don't get virus and such nonsense a lot. I have gimp but don't work much with graphics anyway. For playing back media files, I have different software which I got when I purchased certain hardware. And I use Firefox! I prefer it over IE.
I plan to change over to Linux. I have 3 distributions downloaded but haven't fully switched yet. I had a dual booting set up before but right now, no Linux. I am thinking about getting one more PC later. Then I will have Linux and then in due time, it is Good Bye Microsoft!

Hey this is Angie....Kerrie, TaylorGurl...whateva's.....
ReplyDeleteI marked your blog.....
u sure these are free?......lol
Yes. OpenOffice is free and it works beautifully for me. Main thing is, I can use it to open Powerpoint and Excel sheets with it. The antivirus and firewall I mentioned (Avast and Zone Alarm, respectively) are free versions and I am comfortable with them. I don't get viruses. Firefox is also free. But you already have XP and along with it, IE 7.0. If you are comfortable with those, no need to mess with it. You are not yet a geek, eh :D
ReplyDeleteI use keypass for storing my passwords. That is a new addition for me. I have countless passwords and sites. So I keep this all in a single file which I keep in a pen drive. To access my passwords, I have to use a file on that pendrive AND along with that, one master password. I keep a back up of that password at one more place just to be on the safe side. These days I am not bothering to remember the big passwords, especially those I use for bank and such which require frequent changing by default.
If you don't like the idea of using such kewword managers, use the virtual keyboard where ever possible. Be very careful entering important passwords in a computer which another person share with you. There may be a keylogger running on it without you knowing lol
I will just copy and send this to you on mail too :)
Hey, you have a blog somewhere here? I didn't see any blog of yours here.
